Trevecca opened the game with a run in the first and third innings. Martin tied the game with two runs in the top of the fifth, but Trevecca answered with two runs in their half of the inning.
With two out in the top of the seventh inning the RedHawk had runners at first and third TNU’s Brittiany Johnson (36-3) faced MMC’s power hitting first baseman Hollie Sanders. Sanders worked a full count over the first eight pitches and stayed alive with five foul balls. On the ninth pitch of the at bat Johnson got Sanders to swing and miss for the final out of the game and tournament.
Chelsea Bailey paced the Trojans going 3-3 at the plate with a triple, two stolen bases, and three runs scored. At the plate Brittiany Johnson was 1-3 with two RBI. Kacey Coonce was 2-3 with a run scored, a double, and a RBI. Megan Suggs continued her hot bat with a 1-3 performance that included another double.
Johnson pitched the complete game with nine strikeouts and allowed three hits, two runs, one earned run, and four walks. Johnson has a .53 ERA on the season and has 350 strike outs over 240 innings pitched. In her three years at Trevecca Johnson has a 113-21 record and 1,139 strike outs.
TNU had nine hits and three errors while MMC had three hits and one error.
Trevecca already secured a NAIA National Tournament berth with their No. 5 ranking in the final NAIA Softball Poll on Wednesday. The Region XI Tourney was held at Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tenn.
The 27th Annual NAIA Softball National Championship will be held at Wilson Morgan Softball Complex in Decatur, Ala. The 2008 tournament begins with pool play (20 teams) on May 16-17. Qualifying teams advance to the 8-team double-elimination Championship Bracket May 19-21.
