SOFTBALL: Beat Freed 7-3, Advance to ChampionshipClick for Live Audio of Championship Game(s), Tenn. - NAIA No. 5 Trevecca (46-5) remained undefeated in TranSouth Tournament play with a 7-3 extra inning win over No. 3 seed Freed-Hardeman (33-14) on Saturday morning. The teams were completing a storm shortened game. The game was resumed at 11 a.m. on Saturday after the game was stopped tied at three apiece in the top of the sixth inning on Friday afternoon.
Trevecca advances to the championship game which is scheduled to start at approximately 4:15 p.m. on Saturday. The Trojans will play the winner of the 2:15 p.m. Union University/Freed-Hardeman game. Trevecca will need just one victory to win the championship, their opponent will need two wins for the championship.
Each team scored a run in the first inning. Freed took the lead with two runs in the top of the third, but Trevecca answered with two in their half of the fourth to tie the game at three. Both teams scored took advantage of throwing errors in their two run innings. The teams ended regulation tied at three. In the bottom of the eighth Trevecca scored four runs on a grand slam by Chelsea Bailey.
Bailey was 2-3 with four RBI, a grand slam, two runs scored and a stolen base. Brittiany Johnson was 2-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Johnson (32-2) pitched all eight innings and allowed four hits, three runs, one earned run, two walks, and had eight strikeouts. TNU had seven hits and two errors while FHU had four hits and two errors.
Trevecca entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed and have already earned an automatic bid to next week’s NAIA Region XI Tournament at Freed-Hardeman University. The 2008 TranSouth tournament is being played in Jackson, Tenn. at Union University’s Fesmire Field.
