SOFTBALL: Johnson Throws No-Hitter, Trojans Sweeps Cumberland
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – NAIA No. 4 Trevecca (4-0, 2-0) swept Cumberland University (0-2, 0-2) in a double-header 2-0 and 9-2 on Wednesday (March 5).
Brittiany Johnson (2-0) threw a 7-inning no-hitter in game one for the Trojans against the visiting Bulldogs. The senior walked two and struck out 11. Trevecca scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning to secure the victory. Johnson was 1-for-1 at the plate with a pair of walks, a double, and a run scored. Sammy Simon was 1-for-1 with a RBI, run scored, a double, a stolen base and two walks. Alli Donnely (0-1) took the loss for Cumberland.
In game two Trevecca scored three in the first in part on the strength of a Kacey Coonce two-run homer. Coonce was 1-for-1 with two walks, a home run, two RBI and a run scored. Trevecca added a run in the second, two in the third, two in the fifth, and one more in the sixth. Cumberland scored a run in the fourth and fifth. In all Trevecca had nine runs on 10 hits with two errors. Chelsey Bailey was 1-for-4 with a run scored, two RBI and a walk. Sara Nicholson was 2-for-4 with a stolen base. Melinda Patterson was 0-for-2 but had two stolen bases and two runs scored. Karli Rush was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two stolen bases, and a walk.
Stephanie Fisher (2-0) pitched the complete game for the victory. She allowed six hits, two runs, one earned run, walked three and struck out seven. Courtney Carr (0-1) took the loss.
Trevecca will travel to Jackson, Miss. to face Belhaven College (8-8) on Monday, March 10 at 1 p.m.
