
Calvin Holmes, a Western Division All-Conference point guard for the Trojans from 1978-1982, was a key part of the emerging Trojan basketball program. Holmes finished his career as the all-time leader in assists with 419.
The Nashville Hume Fogg high school product held several records including assists in a game (14), free throws attempted (208), and free throws made (156) in a season.
Holmes finished third on the all-time scoring list with 1,289 points while teaming up with five 1,000-point scorers during his four-year career. As a freshman, Holmes averaged 7.6 points per game and shot 51.4% from the field for Coach Ron Bargatzes 14-18 team. In his sophomore season, Holmes, playing for first-year coach Frank Wilson, averaged 8.1 ppg and had 78 assists. The 1979-80 team finished with a winning record (17-16) for the first time since the 1971-72 season.
As a junior Holmes averaged 11.4 ppg and set a school season record with 177 assists. That 1980-81 team finished with 20 wins (23-12) for the first time in school history. In his final season, Holmes led the 1981-82 team to a 25-9 record scoring 14.9 ppg and led the team with 133 assists.
