WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Defeat Lyon, Reed School’s Second Leading Scorer
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – NAIA No. 18 Trevecca (13-8, 7-4) defeated No. RV Lyon College (14-9, 5-7) by the score of 77-70 on Saturday. Trevecca freshman K.C. Van Atta led Trevecca with a season and career high 22 points. Trevecca senior Mariska Reed is now the schools second career leading scorer with 1,512 career points. Reed, who is already the career steals leader, also ranks in the top five in program history in rebounds and assists. Only current assistant coach Jennifer Wilson (2,109) has more career points than Reed in Trevecca women’s basketball history.
When Lyon’s Snezana Jovanovic hit a field goal with 10:22 to go in the first half the Pipers pulled ahead 18-13. Trevecca turned that around and pulled ahead 36-28 at the half with a 23-10 run to close the half.
The Pipers cut the Trojan lead to just five points (42-37) with 15:13 to go. Trevecca’s Kristin Archie stole the ball and drove the length of the court to hit a layup with 11:59 to go that put Trevecca up 53-37. It capped an 11-0 run that put the Trojans in a comfortable position. Lyon and sensational freshman K.K. Hodges (37 points, nine rebounds) cut the lead to just seven points again, but could get no closer. Trevecca was led by one of their talented freshman, K.C. Van Atta, who led the team with 22 points.
Mariska Reed led Trevecca with five assists and four steals. Jennifer Bognar had a team high two blocks. MyRanda Wright led the team with nine rebounds. Abby Lawson (14) and Christian Gibson (11) also scored in double figures. Trevecca’s bench outscored Lyon’s 38-6.
Trevecca will travel to Jackson, Tenn. to face No. 16 Lambuth University (17-7, 9-3) on Monday at 6:00 p.m.
