NASHVILLE, Tenn. – NAIA Div. I No. 9 Trevecca (3-2) fell to NAIA Div. II No. 1 College of the Ozarks (10-0) 100-89 on Saturday in the Pops Duncan Classic.
The College of the Ozarks outscored the Trojans 15-5 to take a 15-7 lead with 16:11 to on the first half clock. The Bobcats would build on their lead to 12 points (34-22) with 8:42 to go in the half. At the 5:43 mark the Ozarks lead 39-28 and the Trojans began to rally. Trevecca tied the score at 43 with 2:30 remaining in the half on a pair of made free throws by Mariska Reed. That capped a 15-4 run by the Trojans. Trevecca gained the lead (49-47) for just the second time in the first half when Abby Lawson hit a pair of free throws with 1:16 on the clock. The lead wouldn’t last as the Bobcats regained the lead by scoring the final four points of the first half. C of O took a 51-49 lead into the locker room.
The Ozarks started the second half off like they finished the first half with a 6-0 run. The combined 10-0 run gave the Bobcats a 57-49 lead with 18:16 to go in the game. With 16:05 remaining C of O held a 59-51 advantage. Trevecca tied the game at 66 (15-7 run) with 11:51 to play on a basket and a free throw from K.C. Van Atta. The Trojans took their first lead of the second half at 68-66 with 11:02 to play on a field goal from Paige McFarlin. With 8:27 left the game was tied at 74. C of O went on a 16-4 run to take a 90-77 lead with 4:07 to go. The Bobcats didn’t allow the Trojans to get closer than 10 the rest of the way and held off TNU for a 100-89 victory.
Trevecca struggled shooting in the game hitting just 27 of 66 (41%) from the field and 6 of 24 (25%) from three point range. Trevecca thrived at the foul line hitting 29 of 36 (81%) to keep the game close. C of O outrebounded TNU 41-32. Trevecca forced 19 turnovers while only turning the ball over 13 times. C of O outscored TNU in the paint 38-30. The Bobcats shot 31 of 58 (53%) from the field, 11 of 26 (42%) from three point range, and 27 of 33 (82%) from the foul line.
Kristin Archie led Trevecca with 22 points. Mariska Reed had a team high eight rebounds and Abby Lawson had four assists. Also scoring in double figures for Trevecca were Lawson (17), K.C. Van Atta (14), Jennifer Bognar (14), and Reed (10). Lawson and Reed each had three steals.
Trevecca will play in the Cumberland University Classic in Lebanon, Tenn. next weekend. The Trojans will play RV Berry College (9-1) at 6 p.m. on Friday, December 14th and Virginia Intermont (3-4) at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 15th.
