BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – NAIA No. 4 Trevecca (1-1) fell behind early, and then saw their rally fall short as they lost by the final score 112-102 at Olivet Nazarene University.
With 10:17 remaining in the first half Trevecca led 26-25 after a lay-up from Jennifer Bognar. Olivet put on an incredible 46-13 run that saw the host Tigers take a commanding 71-39 halftime lead. Olivet scored 38 points off of the bench in the first half and outscored TNU 28-12 in the points off of turnovers category in the half. Trevecca shot just 17-of-43 (39.%) from the field, 3-of-11 (27.3%) from three-point range, and 2-of-2 from the foul line in the first half. Trevecca had 22 first half turnovers. Olivet was 23-of-44 (52.3%) from the field, 12-of-20 (60%) from three-point range, and were 13-17 (76.5%) from the foul line. Olivet had 15 steals.
At one point in the second half Olivet led by 37 points (76-39 – 19:27) and with 13:26 to go it looked like Olivet had secured the win with a 33-point 87-54 lead. Trevecca began to chip away and with: 37 remaining the Trojans had cut the 37-point lead to just six points (48-21 run) at 108-102. Olivet was able to hold on for the 112-102 victory. Trevecca’s second half surge was supplied by outscoring Olivet 34-16 in the paint and turned ONU turnovers into a 27-10 advantage in points scored off of turnovers. Trevecca pounded the ball inside in the second half and were 22-of-48 (45.8%) from the field in the half. Trevecca also had considerably more free throw attempts in the second half – hitting 16-of-20 from the foul line.
For the game Olivet shot 35-of-76 (46.1%) from the field, 16-of-35 (45.7%) from three-point range, and were 26-of-33 (78.8%) from the foul line. Trevecca was 39-of-91 (42.9%) from the field, 6-of-25 (24%) from three-point range, and 18-of-22 (81.8%) from the foul line.
Jennifer Bognar led Trevecca with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Mariska Reed had 20 points, three steals and five rebounds. Kristin Archie had 13 points, four assists and four steals. K.C. Van Atta had 12 points and three steals. Christian Gibson had a team high five assists.
Trevecca will face NAIA No. 22 Brescia University at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
