Season Review 2000-2001
The Trojans looked to build on their first national tournament appearance as they entered the 2001 season. The Lady Trojans struggled early in the season as they faced stiff competition from the likes of Southern Nazarene, Oklahoma Baptist, and Brescia. After a thrilling win at Lipscomb, which is now a NCAA Division I team, the Lady Trojans record stood at 5-4. The Lady Trojans continued to struggle as they headed to TranSouth conference play. The Lady Trojans entered the conference season with a record of 6-8.
The Lady Trojans began to play some of their best basketball of the season as conference play started. They swept through the conference season with a record of 11-3, which was good for third place behind Union and Freed-Hardeman. The Lady Trojans also posted their second win of the season over Lipscomb 83-80, as Sophomore Jennifer Wilson hit a buzzer beater at the end of overtime. The Lady Trojans defeated Berry College in the first game of the TranSouth Conference Tournament. They were defeated in the semifinals as they lost a tough game to Freed-Hardeman 82-71.
The Lady Trojans finished the regular season at 19-12 and they were rewarded with a return invitation to the NAIA National Tournament in Jackson, Tennessee. The Lady Trojans faced off against 5th seed Lewis-Clark State of Idaho. The Lady Trojans fought valiantly but came up short against the hot shooting of Lewis-Clark by a score of 84-72.
The Lady Trojans were led again this season by sophomore Jennifer Wilson who averaged 18.3 ppg on the season and finished second in the TranSouth in scoring. Senior center Molly Schoenberg added 14.1 ppg, which was good for eighth in the conference, and Junior Ashley Boykin added 10.9 ppg, which was good for 17th in the conference. Newcomer Charity Williams paced the Lady Trojans in rebounding with 7 a game, which was good for 8th in the conference. Molly Schoenberg also had a strong year on the boards as she pulled down 6 rebounds a game. Jennifer Wilson again proved to be solid at the free throw line as she led the conference shooting 82.8% from the charity stripe.
The 2000-2001 season was a season in which the Lady Trojans faced tough competition during every game. The Lady Trojans made great strides as the season progressed and were rewarded with their second consecutive national tournament appearance. Jennifer Wilson earned Second Team NAIA All-American Honors as well as First team All-TranSouth honors. Senior Molly Schoenberg earned Honorable Mention All-American honors as well as First team All-TranSouth honors. With an excellent freshman class, a strong recruiting class and the return of leading scorer Jennifer Wilson, the Lady Trojans should have another great season in 2002.
