MEN'S BASKETBALL: Knock Off Cumberland for 22nd Win
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – NAIA No. 19 Trevecca (22-8, 14-6) defeated Cumberland (20-10, 13-7) by the score of 55-51 to secure third place in the final TranSouth regular season standings. Trevecca will be the #3 seed in the TranSouth tournament and will host the winner of the Tuesday night’s #11 Blue Mountain vs. #6 Crichton game on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
Cumberland led the entire first half and led by as many as six points twice (11-5, 15-9) before the Trojans cut their lead to just one point at 15-14 with 8:11 to go in the first half. Cumberland outscored the Trojans 13-3 over the final eight minutes to take a 28-17 lead into the intermission.
Cumberland moved their lead to 13 points (30-17) with the opening basket of the second half and held a 13-point (38-25) lead with 14:43 to go in the game. Trevecca outscored Cumberland 17-5 to take a 44-43 lead with on a Josh Helton three-point basket with 7:29 to go. After a Cumberland basket the Trojans used a 8-0 run to take a seven point (52-45) lead with 1:14 to go. The Bulldogs cut the lead to just three points (54-51) with 16 seconds remaining, but the Trojans held on for the 55-51 victory.
Collins Onyando led the Trojan effort with a double-double. The senior scored 14 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and added two blocks, two assists and a steal. Brian Oduor topped the scoring list with 15 points while Josh Helton also scored in double figures with 14 points. Oduor added six rebounds and a block. Helton led the team with two steals.
