LEBANON, Tenn. – NAIA No. 19 Trevecca (16-4, 8-2) defeated No. 16 Cumberland University (13-6, 7-3) on Thursday in a game that kept the Trojans in a tie for first place in the TranSouth with Lambuth University.
Cumberland started the game with a 7-3 run before the Trojans answered with a 10-0 run to take a 13-7 lead on a Jeremy Dixon field goal with 13:09 to go in the half. The Trojans would eventually pull ahead by 11 points (35-24) at the half.
In the second half Trevecca’s Marcos Salvi hit a three-point basket with 11:46 to go in the game to put the Trojans up 46-33. Trevecca didn’t hit a field goal the remainder of the game and in fact didn’t score again until 3:13 to go when Josh Helton hit a free throw. Cumberland would cut the Trojan lead to just one point (53-52) with :09 seconds remaining. Trevecca’s Mathew Elliot hit a pair free throws with :08 to go and sealed the victory. The breaks a two-game Cumberland win streak in the series. Trevecca has won five of the last seven meetings in the series and now lead the all-time series 34-17.
Matthew Elliott and Josh Helton scored 14 points apiece to lead the team in scoring. Brian Oduor led the team in rebounding with nine and Collins Onyando led the team with four assists.
