SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – NAIA No. 7 Trevecca (8-1) fell 74-72 to the University of Victoria (11-3) as they completed play in the Scottsdale Days Inn Classic at Scottsdale Community College.
After a poor shooting performance on Friday against Simon Fraser, the Trojans came out on fire in the first half against the Vikes. Trevecca hit 16 of 26 (61.5%) from the field, 8 of 11 (72.7%) from three point range and hit all five free throw attempts in the first half to take a 44-35 lead at the break. Josh Helton (16), Marcos Salvi (10), and Christopher Harris (8) led TNU in scoring in the first half. Helton was 4 of 7 from three-point range.
The Vikes started the second half on fire with a 14-5 run that tied the game at 49 with 13:00 minutes to go and held a single digit lead for most of the remainder of the game. The Trojans closed the gap several times, but the Vikes were able to hold the Trojans off in the final seconds to claim the win.
Marcos Salvi had 17 points for the second day in a row for Trevecca. Josh Helton led Trevecca with 22 points and Christopher Harris added 11 points. Collins Onyando had six rebounds while Salvi added five. Onyando had three blocks. Rick James and Harris led the team with four assists each. Helton had a team high three steals. The Trojans hit all 12 free throw attempts.
Trevecca will start 2008 on the road in conference play on January 5th (4 p.m.) at #RV Freed-Hardeman (8-1) and at Crichton College (6-4) on January 7th (7 p.m.) before returning home to face Union University (6-3) on January 10.
