LEBANON, Tenn. - Trevecca (5-0) defeated the University of the Cumberlands (5-4) 77-73 in the Cumberland University Rosa Stokes Memorial Classic
Trevecca led 18-5 with a 12-0 run. The Cumberlands would work the lead down to just seven points at 30-23 with 6:30 remaining in the half. The Trojans would answer with a 17-2 run to close the first half and led 37-25 at the break. In the second half the Patriots would cut the Trojan advantage to just nine points at 51-42. Trevecca used a 10-3 run to take their largest lead of the game at 61-45 with 8:00 remaining in the game. The Patriots would answer again with a 17-4 run and trailed just 65-62 with 2:38 to go. Trevecca held off the Cumberlands with improved free throw shooting down the stretch.
Trevecca had five players reach double figure scoring. Marcos Salvi and Josh Helton each had 14 while Brian Oduor added 13. Collins Onyando and Matthew Elliot added 10 apiece. Onyando produced a double-double with a team high 11 rebounds. Helton led the way with four assists.
As a team Trevecca was 25-47 (53%) from the field, 7-of-13 (55%) from beyond the 3-point arch, and 20-of-31 (65%) from the foul line. Trevecca won the battle of the boards 35-31 but lost the turnover category 17-11.
Trevecca will face Fisk University at 2 p.m. in the Cumberland University Rosa Stokes Memorial Classic in Lebanon, Tenn.
