NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Trevecca (4-0) defeated Voorhees College (4-2) 96-65 at Moore Gym on Saturday. Voorhees, like Trevecca, received votes in the NAIA preseason Top 25. Voorhees defeated Trevecca (77-70) in the season opener last season in Denmark, S.C.
Trevecca and Voorhees kept things close early on until the Trojans pulled away 30-20 with a 8-0 run with 6:15 to go in the first half. Trevecca led 53-32 at the break. It was the second time the Trojans had led by 21 in the first half. In the second half Trevecca salted the game away with a 14-2 run to start the half and led 67-34 with 15 minutes remaining. Voorhees last run was a 12-0 run that closed the Trojan lead to 20-points (69-49) with 9:00 minutes on the clock.
Trevecca had five players score in double-figures led by Rick James with 15. Christopher Harris (13), Marcos Salvi (12), Josh Helton (10), and Brian Oduor (10) also hit double digits. Collins Onyando had eight points and a team high 10 rebounds. Salvi just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Oduor grabbed seven rebounds. Helton just missed a double-double as he had a team high eight assists. Onyando and Oduor each had a pair of blocks.
As a team Trevecca shot 37-of-66 (56%) from the field, 11-of-19 (57%) from 3-point range, and 11-of-13 (85%) from the foul line. Trevecca outrebounded Voorhees 45-38 and had 18 turnovers with eight steals. The Trojans outscored the Tigers 23-2 on fastbreak points and 44-26 in the paint. Trevecca outscored Voorhees 43-33 in the second half.
Trevecca will take nearly two weeks off before playing the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) on at 4 p.m. November 30, 2007 in the Cumberland University Classic in Lebanon, Tenn.
