BASEBALL: Beat Bethel in TSAC Opener, Face Cumberland Tues.
MILLINGTON, Tenn. – NAIA No. 16 Trevecca (34-12) defeated No. seed Bethel College (31-16) 13-3 in the first round of the conference tournament at USA Stadium in Millington. The 10-run rule is in effect for the first round and the game was shortened to eight innings.
Trevecca, the tournament’s top seed, will face the No. 4 seed Cumberland University (37-19) on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Click here for a link to Cumberland’s live audio and live statistical webcast of the game. Trevecca will face at 4 p.m. on Tuesday in the second round. Cumberland defeated Martin Methodist 6-5 on Monday.
Trevecca scored a two runs in the first, added three in the second and two more in fourth to take a 7-0 lead. The Wildcats added a run in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to cut the Trojan lead to four at 7-3. Trevecca added a run in the seventh and forced the 10-run rule into effect with five in the eight inning. TNU had 13 hits and an error while BC had three hits and four errors.
Marty Parks walked to lead off the bottom of the first for Trevecca. Chris Lowe bunted Parks to second for the first out. Parks advanced to third on a passed ball. Dirheimer walked and Cody Heggie followed that with a fielder’s choice that forced Dirheimer at second, but scored Parks. Dylan Lynch followed with a RBI double that scored Heggie. In the second Aaron Bree singled and advanced to second on a Justin Mundy ground out. Bree scored after Ross Muirhead reached on an infield single and a subsequent wild throw that advance Muirhead to second. Parks walked and joined Muirhead on a successful double steal. After a Lowe pop out, Dirheimer drove in Muirhead and Parks with a single. The 5-0 margin would be enough for the win.
Parks was 1-3, but had two walks, two steals, and scored four runs. Dirheimer was 2-4 with a run and three RBI. Heggie was 3-5 with three doubles, two runs and three RBI. Bree was 2-3 with a double, a walk, a run scored, and three RBI.
Trojan starting pitcher Ben Johnson (4-4) picked up the win after going six innings and allowing three hits, three runs and six walks. He had three strike outs. Barrett Brown came on in relief and pitched the final two innings. Brown didn’t allow a hit, but did issue two walks and had two strike outs.
