NASHVILLE, Tenn. – NAIA No. 17 Trevecca (3-1) hosted #RV Indiana Tech (0-0) on Friday afternoon in the first game of a weekend series, with the Trojans pulling out the victory 8-5.
Trevecca jumped out to the early lead behind back-to-back RBI doubles from Brian Dirheimer and Dylan Lynch in the bottom of the first, staking starter Wesley Griggs to the early 2-0 lead. Indiana Tech plated a run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Jason Ferens, but Trojans’ starter Wesley Griggs was able to pitch his way out of trouble with no further damage, and after three innings, the Trojans held the 2-1 lead. Indiana Tech broke through again in the fifth inning, capitalizing on a pair of Trojan errors to tie the game, and then taking the lead on a double steal with runners at first and third. Trevecca tied the game in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Chris Lowe, and Brent Amburn relieved Griggs in the sixth inning. The Warriors went to the pen in the bottom of the sixth as well, bringing in Jeremy Sheeks to replace starter Mike Linder, and with two outs, Adam Bland belted a go-ahead RBI double to left, scoring Nathan Wright and reclaiming the lead for the Trojans. Trevecca tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the eighth, an inning that was highlighted by a three-RBI double from Omar DeJesus to stretch the lead to 8-3. Indiana Tech rallied in the ninth for a pair of runs, but Chris Sutherland (2) nailed down his second consecutive save opportunity, as Trevecca held on for the 8-5 win.
Amburn (1-0) earned the win for the Trojans, tossing 3.1 innings of two hit, two run ball in relief of Griggs, while walking four and fanning one. Jeremy Sheeks (0-1) took the loss for the Warriors. Brian Dirheimer led the way for the Trojans offensively, posting a 2-for-4 day with a pair of doubles (2) a run scored (4) and an RBI (9). Chris Lowe went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored (5) and an RBI (4); and Omar DeJesus was 1-for-1 with a double (1) and three RBI (3).
The Trojans will wrap up the weekend series with the Warriors on Saturday when the teams meet for a double header. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
