NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Trevecca Trojan Baseball team (2-1) wrapped up their season opening weekend series with the Milligan College Buffaloes (1-2) at Jackson Field on Saturday,
In the first game, Wesley Griggs took the hill for the Trojans, allowing five runs in the first inning, including a grand slam to Milligan center fielder Ryan Jamison. The Trojans answered in the bottom of the frame when Brian Dirheimer (1) blasted a three-run homer to cut the deficit to 5-3. Milligan scored another run in the second inning, and three more in the fourth to stretch their lead to 9-3. In the bottom of the fifth, Trevecca’s Seth Hawkins hit a sacrifice fly and Adam Bland added a two-RBI double to pull the Trojans within three at 9-6, and in the bottom of the sixth, Marty Parks and Aaron Bree each scored on Milligan errors, bringing Trevecca within a single run. That was as close as the Trojans would get, as Milligan held on for the 9-8 victory.
Griggs (0-1) took the loss for the Trojans, allowing six earned runs on two hits, while walking six and fanning four in three innings of work. Michael Dillow (1-0) earned the win for Milligan, and Frank Newcomb (1) notched the save. Dirheimer finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate, with the homer and three RBI, and Chris Lowe was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored (2). Milligan scored nine runs on five hits and committed four errors, While Trevecca scored eight runs on nine hits and made three errors.
In the series finale, Nick Shoup took the ball for Trevecca, and the offense immediately staked him to a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the first inning, Marty Parks led off with a single and went first-to-third on a sacrifice bunt by Aaron Bree. Chris Lowe then drove him in with a single and stole second before scoring on a Brian Dirheimer single. Wade Angel and Dylan Lynch each added RBI singles of their own to cap the four run spurt. Milligan platedtwo unearned runs in the second inning and one earned run in the third to cut the Trojans’ lead to 4-3, but Trevecca scored three runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by Dirheimer’s second home run of the day, a solo shot to right center, stretching the lead to 7-3. After Shoup battled out of a jam in the top of the fourth, Trevecca put up three more runs in the bottom of the inning. Milligan tallied a run in the top of the fifth, but that was all they could get, and the Trojans pulled out the win 10-4.
Shoup (1-0) earned the victory, tossing five innings of five hit ball, allowing four runs, while walking four, and fanning five. Nathan Fritz (0-1) took the loss for the Buffaloes. Dirheimer was 3-for-3 with a homer (2) and three RBI (6) and Dylan Lynch was 2-for-2 with a double, two runs scored and three RBI (4). Trevecca scored 10 runs on 15 hits, and Milligan plated four runs on six hits. Each team committed two errors in the game.
Trevecca will continue their season on Wednesday, February 13 at 1:00 when they host the Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs (0-0).
